Cemhan was born in Istanbul, Turkey in 1979 and his family fled when he was four years old. He was raised in SoHo, New York City — the same neighborhood where he would later open Unpomela on Broadway. He has lived with aphantasia his entire life, the inability to form mental imagery on demand, and survived a traumatic brain injury (TBI) that briefly took his speech in adulthood. Photography became his speech therapy.
